Obituary of Urania M. Cimino

  It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Urania (Ronnie) Cimino at her home in Old Forge on October 12, 2022, two days shy of her 101^st birthday.

     She was born on October 14, 1921, the second daughter of Liberato and Rose Augustine Trotta. As a child, she attended Moosic Road Elementary School and went on to graduate from Old Forge High School in 1939. After graduation, she was employed by the Faultless Pants Company, Scranton, as a seamstress and later by The Brooks Manufacturing Plant in Old Forge. A talented seamstress, her skill with needle and thread was unparalleled. She would often make her own and others clothes as a labor of love. She was unequaled in making Halloween costumes for her nieces and especially for her two grandsons.

    Her other great passion and source of joy was cooking. Ronnie, as her friends and family knew her, became a wonderful cook, spending countless hours in her kitchen preparing Italian dishes and pastries. Her Christmas cookies were a source of wonderment in taste and variety. Her cooking talents were not confined to Italian dishes; she would eagerly experiment with recipes that her friends shared with her. Often, she would improve upon them. She especially loved cooking for her two grandsons Anthony and PJ, both of whom turned Thursday nights into dinner time at her house. She often prepared elaborate lunches for whomever happened by, especially her son AJ who usually just happened to be in the area.

    She loved gardening and tending to her backyard. In the summer she could be found tending her prodigious flower beds for hours at a time. This she did well into her nineties.

     Never mistaken for a “shrinking violet,” she was always willing to give advice and guidance gleaned from the experiences of a long and well lived life. Her words of wisdom and her anecdotes will be missed greatly.

     The family would like to extend their gratitude to her special friends and companions: Ann Monacelli and Jean Benke, both of Old Forge, and her care givers: Lisa Leone and Kathleen Collins, who made her final days comfortable and peaceful.

     Urania is survived by her son, Anthony and his wife Judi, Dunmore, her two grandsons: Anthony J and Peter J Cimino, nieces and nephews: Rose Ann Sabatelli, Santo Sperrazza, Leo Sabatelli, Narda Sperrazza, Gina Sabatelli, Leo Sperrazza, Jim Sperrazza, and Rose Sperrazza.

    She was preceded in death by her husband Sam and four sisters: Rose “Dolly” Sabatelli, Carmella Trotta, Angela Sperrazza, and Sylvia Trotta, and a nephew, William (Billy) Sabatelli.

     A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated in Urania’s honor on Saturday October 15^th at 10:00 am at Prince of Peace Parish, Saint Mary of the Assumption Church, 123 West Grace Street, Old Forge. Internment: Old Forge Cemetery.

     Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects to Urania, prior to mass at the church on Saturday 9:00 – 10:00 a.m.

     In lieu of flowers and gifts, contributions can be made in her name to Hospice of the Sacred Heart in Dunmore, PA, whose dedicated and caring nurses were wonderful in providing for her and comfort and care during her final days. They were available in a moment’s notice, and their efforts were very much appreciated and will never be forgotten.
