Obituary of James H. Tigue
James H. “Slim” Tigue, 78, of Edwardsville and formerly of Avoca, died peacefully on Feb. 9th after a brief illness. In 2006, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 20 years, the former Germain “Gerri” Walsh.
Born Feb. 24, 1939, in Avoca, he was the son of the late Harold and Harriet Waters Tigue. A graduate of Scranton Prep High School and the University of Scranton, Slim taught history at the Susquehanna School District, NY.
Slim, an avid horse handicapper, could always be found from July through August with his wife, Gerri, by his side, picking winners and placing bets at the Saratoga Racetrack, NY. When they weren’t in Saratoga, Slim and Gerri could be found at the West Side Club in Avoca enjoying the friendship of the many people who knew them. Slim and Gerri were lifelong Red Barons’ season ticket holders, enjoying many summertime nights in the stands cheering on their team.
Though not survived by any immediate family members, Slim will be remembered by the many Avocans, especially Bob “Yabo” and Sandy Loftus, and all the gang at the West Side Club. Slim was preceded in death by his beloved cat, Buddy.
The close friends of Slim would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the staff of Allied Hospice, especially nurse Michelle, for their phenominal care and compassion they displayed during this trying time. Also, thanks to Dr. Martin Moran for his dedication to Slim throughout his many years of care and especially for the help he provided for Slim in his last days.
Interment will be private as Slim wished with no services. A celebration of Slim’s life will be held on Saturday, Feb. 24th at 3 p.m. at the West Side Club, Avoca. All who knew him are invited to attend.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Louis V. Ciuccio Funeral Home, 145 Moosic Road, Old Forge.
